Aggressive by design. Free forever when you self-host.

SaaS plans that undercut every ngrok tier. Generous free limits that don't pinch on request rate. And a self-host path that's never been gated behind a paywall.

Hosted (app.21tunnel.com)

Pay for scale, never for security.

MFA, RBAC, audit log, and the full inspector are on every tier — including Hobby. We charge for tunnel count, bandwidth, and retention. We don't charge to turn on the security features.

Run the whole stack on your VM.

Quick compare

Where we sit on pricing.

Both products have unique sweet spots. Here's our honest take on which we win, which we don't.

Free tier

Us: 3 tunnels, 50 GB/mo, custom domain, unlimited requests.

ngrok: 1 tunnel, rate-capped, ephemeral subdomain.

Clear win for us if you hit the rate cap

Starter paid tier

Us: $5/mo Pro, 20 tunnels, webhook verify.

ngrok: ~$10/mo Personal.

Half the price, more features

Polish + reliability

Us: MVP-stage, April 2026.

ngrok: decade-old, extremely reliable.

ngrok still wins on track record

Self-host

Us: free forever, MIT + Apache-2.0.

ngrok: no self-host.

Only open-source option

Pricing FAQ

What people actually ask.

What counts as a “tunnel” on the quota? +

A tunnel is one concurrent agent session. If you're running three services exposed simultaneously, that's three tunnels. Restarting your agent doesn't count as a new one — we reuse the slot within a short grace window.

What happens if I go over my bandwidth limit? +

Your tunnels keep working. On Hobby we throttle to 10 Mbps for the rest of the month (never terminate). On paid tiers we bill overage at $0.02/GB, which is roughly half what ngrok charges effectively. You can set a cap in the dashboard if you want hard limits.

Will Hobby stay free forever? Cloud companies always say that. +

Hobby's marginal cost to us is measured in cents/user/month. We're committing in writing that pricing changes to existing Hobby accounts require 90 days' notice and always offer a grandfathered tier. Self-host is the hedge — if we ever did turn evil, you clone the repo and run it yourself.

Can I pay once / lifetime / in crypto? +

Not currently — we're on Stripe only, monthly or annual. Crypto / wire / lifetime are on the roadmap for enterprise deals; talk to us if the standard checkout doesn't work for your procurement.

Education / open-source / non-profit discounts? +

Yes — free Pro tier for verified students, maintainers of popular OSS projects, and registered non-profits. Email hey@21tunnel.com with a link to your GitHub or organization and we'll flip the switch within a day.

Do you offer a free trial of Team? +

14-day Team trial, no credit card. Invite up to 10 teammates. If it's not working for you, downgrade to Hobby or Pro with one click — we don't convert silently.

No credit card. No rate cap.

Start on Hobby in under a minute. Or clone the repo and run the whole platform yourself — free forever.
